Feeding Multiple Dogs

Many clients that I have encountered over the years have experienced fights between their dogs during feeding times.

Because of this most have decided to feed their dogs in separate rooms. While this will stop the fighting it will not do anything to address the dog issues that you are having. Fighting during feedings can be caused by a variety of reasons; bullying, resource guarding, or lack of positive leadership. There are a variety of other reasons, but these are the most common. Working toward feeding your group of dogs together will help create more unity between you and your beloved fur children.

To start feeding your pack together, first make sure everyone is separate and safe. This could be done by a child gate or use of crates. Next make sure your dog can SIT or DOWN until given the release word. Have ALL of your dogs SIT/DOWN while you prepare their food bowls. Next, place the food bowls in front of each dog in the designated order. Release your dogs to eat saying your chosen release word. Lastly, have each dog SIT/DOWN after they finish eating and STAY until you pick up the bowls and release them.

The most difficult part of the training is getting each dog to wait until they hear the release word. A lot of patience is needed until your dogs understand the new way of feeding. But, since food is such an important part of life and is institutionally a social event for both species a little patience is sure to pay off!

IN MY HAND can be a great “trick”, solution to resource guarding, or not wanting to drop toys. The concept of IN MY HAND can be difficult for some dogs so it is best to break the request down into steps. Below is a collection of videos...

The Power of the Release Word

Even though most dog owners know what a release word is, rarely is it used properly or in sufficient amount. While almost every dog trainer teaches how to use a release word I do not believe that its importance is stressed enough. What I usually...

Come

One of the most common complaints among dog owners is their dogs’ recall; or lack thereof. Most dog owners would never dream of letting their dog off a leash because they are terrified that their beloved fur child will never come back. Even...

Winter Fun

With winter in full storm it is important to realize how the cold weather and snow affects your dog. Both humans and dogs are susceptible to frost bite, hypothermia, and pneumonia. Just because your dog has a permanent fur coat doesn’t mean...
